Providing employees with a modern and intuitive technology experience is more than a nice-to-have strategy at the law firm of Ropes and Gray. As one of the world’s premier law firms with 1,200 attorneys working across three continents, the company understands that employing unwieldy or outdated technology can not only impair the firm’s productivity it can impact its ability to recruit and retain top attorneys.
That belief extends to its human resources systems, where the firm recently sought to improve a benefits open enrollment process that was causing frustration and confusion among employees.
Ropes and Gray was using PeopleSoft HCM in combination with a third-party tool for its open enrollment process.
That approach had two shortcomings:
InFlight applied a solution that unified the two parts of the process and added a benefits enrollment wizard that acts as a personal concierge in helping Ropes and Gray employees make complex benefits choices. The costly third-party tool was eliminated and enrollment is now done fully within PeopleSoft. The solution integrated easily with existing infrastructure and didn’t require the company to upgrade its PeopleSoft HCM to a newer version.
“We recruit the best-of-the-best attorneys here so it’s important we give them a great user experience with our internal technology,” said Elizabeth Zimmerman, senior manager of HR systems and processes at Ropes and Gray. “The InFlight solution eliminated the need for employees to have to log onto multiple sites during enrollment, made their benefits decision-making process easier, and removed a huge pain point for us.”
The new system guides employees through a series of questions with the fully-configurable wizard to identify the best benefits for their unique needs, enabling side-by-side plan comparisons. All relevant benefits information in the PeopleSoft HCM is fully integrated into the wizard.
A recent study by the Harvard Business Review found employers with outmoded IT systems are struggling to compete successfully for talent. Ropes and Gray understands the vital role that next-generation technology plays in addressing that recruiting and retention challenge.
“I was recently at a meeting of HR leaders in our firm and the feedback about the new open enrollment process was overwhelmingly positive,” said Ropes and Gray’s Zimmerman. “They understand how important having a more intuitive and streamlined process is to employee satisfaction.”
